The Lebanese sweets have a long history that traces its origins back to The Northern Lebanese region, specifically to the city of "Tripoli", which was distinguished for its oriental and Arab sweets. Its confectioners have competed and mastered the preparation of sweets with renewed and variously delicious flavors Hala means "sweets" in the local Lebanese dialect.
This attribute is credited to multiple Tripoli based Lebanese families who have been home-making sweets for more than hundreds of years; since the 19th Century, their generations passed their skills to the next, which led to the popularity and prosperity of this delight to the point that their confectionery craft became an integrated trade outside the city, homeland and even across continents.
The foundation behind Tripoli's historical reputation in confectioning the sweets is the abundance of two types of agricultural crops, namely sugar cane and citrus fruits. Fact which prompted the women of the city to master the various flavors of sweets in their homes first, in order to exhaust their sugar surplus, all while proudly competing to prepare the best.
